LAKE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

AmeriCorps

VI.                       Title: Lake County Office of Education,

VII.                   Literacy Members (Preschool-12th grade)

I.                  AmeriCorps-is a national community service program designed to help communities meet the specific needs in their area by recruiting and training individuals who are willing to devote one to two years service in selected community projects. Service programs, strengthen communities, encourage responsibility, expand opportunities for education, provide job experience and increase life skills.

 

II.               Lake County AmeriCorps Program- Members participating in this program are part of a county wide tutoring initiative serving preschool through twelfth grade students, though a partnership between Lake County Office of Education, Lake County First 5, and County Schools.

 
 

Position Summary: Members, under the supervision of Site Coordinators and AmeriCorps Program Director, will provide literacy and language arts instruction consistent with model outlined by the AmeriCorps program.  Members will help students enjoy learning thereby improving their literacy skills and increasing the student’s self-esteem by enabling them to become a successful learner.

 

Essential Functions:

 

Tutoring Environments (80% of time)

·         Follows Lake County Office of Education’s and AmeriCorps procedures and policies.

·         Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to students selected by their site for tutoring no less than 1 hour per week.

·         Administer complex assessments to students in order to assess the students learning gaps.

·         Develop lessons for each student based on assessment results and curriculums/models used by the AmeriCorps program and site-based curriculums.

·         Record attendance, activities, and student growth in each student folder.

·         Enter student data into program database according to program timeline.

·         Communicate with each student’s teacher when necessary.

·         Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning, read aloud to students, listen while students read aloud.

·         Help students with skills such as: Using a dictionary and Encyclopedia, developing library skills, reading books, newspapers and magazines.

·         Help with spelling skills, play word games with students, reinforce vocabulary actives.

·         Provide an interested adult for the student/s who can benefit from this interaction.

 
 

Training, Supervision, and Community Projects (20% of time)

·         Participates in on-site and off-site learning opportunities including staff meetings and in-service trainings.

·         Attend weekly supervision meetings with Site Coordinator.

·         Participate in mandatory and optional training opportunities.

·         Participate in mandatory National Service Days.

Knowledge and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:  (trainings will be provided & required)

·         Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

·         Ability to serve with diverse workgroups and serve families with diverse economic, social, racial, and cultural backgrounds.

·         Knowledgeable about AmeriCorps, school site, First 5, Healthy Start activities and local community resources.

·         Ability to establish and maintain personal and programmatic boundaries while providing service.

·         Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to individuals who may not share basic commonality, including value systems and behavior norms.

·         Experience in serving with culturally diverse communities and families, with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate.

·         Demonstrate good writing and organizational skill.

·         Skill to maintain a professional, confidential service environment.

·         Ability to manage multiple tasks in an efficient manner.

·         Knowledge of child abuse issues, substance abuse and family dynamics.

·         Knowledge of child development and behavior.

·         Ability to work evenings and weekends, if required.

·         Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

AmeriCorps Requirement

 

·        Proof of citizenship

·         18 years of Age before completion of the program

·         High School Diploma or GED, or working to get one before completion of program

·         Fingerprints and background check, including DOJ and FBI level checks

·         Current TB test (within 4 years)

 

Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual Demands

 

Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position under sometimes stressful conditions; Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines, operate an automobile; Vision sufficient to read printed materials; Hearing sufficient to conduct in person and telephone conversations; Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distance, on the telephone, and in addressing groups; Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, District, from school or home site to site), to drive a an automobile; Physical, mental, and emotional tolerance to be exposed to the noise generated by children in an enclosed environment; Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.

 

Hours of Position:

 

Tutoring positions are either 450 or 900 hours positions, which require an average of either 15 or 30 hours of service per week, typically during the hours of school operation or after school.

 

Salary:

This position is a volunteer position and does not pay an hourly wage or salary. Members will however receive a monthly living allowance, and upon completion of the program, may qualify to receive an Educational award.

III.           Healthy Start - provide extra support and wrap-around school site services to students and their families.  Through a wide range of community based services and external referral resources, Healthy start members provides families with the support they need to enable their children to attend school healthy and ready to learn. In partnership with over 30 agencies in Lake County, Healthy Start helps preschool through high school students to learn and reach their full potential, strengthens families and the community to which they belong.

 

Position Summary: Members, under the supervision of Site Coordinators and AmeriCorps Program Director, will provide support to preschool students and their families.  Members will meet with students individually and in groups to provide support at school and link families to needed services. AmeriCorps members shall serve as the family’s primary contact. The member will provide information and assistance to walk-in and call-in families, education and outreach strategies to promote optimal childhood development, and encourage Healthy Start program access. Healthy Start members will serve with families in a variety of settings, including Nurturing Parenting classes, in parent support groups, during Parent Meetings at the preschools and at Health Fairs to facilitate school readiness activities and promoting positive parent-child interaction.

 

Essential Functions:  

Direct Service- (80% of time)

·         Follows Lake County Office of Education’s and AmeriCorps procedures and policies.

·         Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to students and their families selected by their site or site supervisor for services.

·         Record attendance, activities, and other data in accordance with position.

·         Enter student data into program database according to program timeline.

·         Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning.

·         Provide point of contact for families and agency representatives by providing excellent customer service and information and/or assistance to direct the client to all Healthy Start activities, programs and services, as well as additional community programs and services as requested by the client.

·         Provide health education to preschool children and their parents, such as Nutrition lessons, Oral Health lessons, Nurturing Parenting material, monthly special events, etc. Includes designing, planning, promoting, conducting and evaluating programs.

·         Provide outreach strategies in the community to encourage Healthy Start use and/or optimal use of needed health care and health education classes.

·         Participate in community events on behalf of Healthy Start.

·         Complete documentation of Service Activities as required
